BOPP Tape vs Kraft Paper Tape: How to Compare Them

Start With the Carton and Distribution Route

There is no universally better carton-sealing tape. The correct choice depends on the carton surface, recycled content, coating, dust, load, flap stress, application equipment, storage conditions, journey, presentation, and end-of-life requirements.

BOPP Packaging Tape

BOPP tape uses a polypropylene film backing with a pressure-sensitive adhesive system. Depending on the construction, it may provide clear or colored appearance, consistent machine dispensing, moisture resistance, and good tensile performance.

Check the exact adhesive type and application-temperature range. Two BOPP tapes that look similar can behave differently on recycled or heavily printed cartons.

Kraft Paper Tape

Kraft paper tape uses a paper backing and may use pressure-sensitive or water-activated adhesive. These are different systems and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Paper tape can provide a natural carton appearance and may be easy to tear by hand in some constructions. Recycling claims must be verified for the complete tape, adhesive, reinforcement, carton, and requirements of the receiving recycling facility.

Questions to Compare

  • • Does the tape bond consistently to the actual carton surface?
  • • Is application manual, handheld-dispenser based, or automated?
  • • Does the carton experience cold, heat, humidity, dust, or long storage?
  • • Is hand tear important, or is high tensile strength the priority?
  • • Are appearance, printing, tamper indication, or sustainability documentation required?
  • • Can the tape be applied with repeatable pressure and sufficient overlap?

Run a Side-by-Side Trial

Prepare representative cartons using the normal packing process. Compare application time, unwind consistency, flap closure, edge lifting, carton opening during handling, and condition after the expected storage and transport cycle.

Document the tape construction and dimensions used in the trial. A result from one adhesive coat weight or backing thickness should not be generalized to every product in that category.

Build the Purchase Specification

Once a tape passes the trial, record the approved product, width, length, backing, adhesive type, color, printing requirement, tolerances, and acceptance checks. Purchasing only by a generic description such as “brown tape” makes consistent performance difficult.
